Covering the Basics with Your Chiropractor in Richardson
Just as when you visit other healthcare providers, there a few baseline questions and procedures to go through when you see a chiropractor. Initially, there will be similarities, but as you and your chiropractor in Richardson delve deeper into what brings you to the office, there will be distinct differences. Here’s what to expect at your first visit.
The Questions
Dr. Z will have several questions prepared for you to answer regarding your medical history, pre-existing conditions and any medications that you take regularly. Questions about pain might include:
- How did the pain start?
- Where is the pain located?
- Did an accident or injury cause the pain?
- Is the pain sharp, dull or burning?
- Is the pain constant or intermittent?
- Does a certain activity/movement make the pain better or worse?
The Chiropractic Examination
Dr. Z will perform a chiropractic exam, which is similar to a physical in that it also includes taking your blood pressure and pulse, a respiratory test and a check of your reflexes. There are also orthopedic and neurological tests to evaluate the range of motion at the affected part of the body, muscle tone and strength and neurological integrity. Other test may be needed depending on your unique set of circumstances.
The Diagnostic Exam
Based on what Dr. Z. discovers during your chiropractic exam, he may want to take X-rays or other diagnostic studies. These can show pathologies or structural abnormalities that may help to pinpoint the reason you are having pain. For your convenience, X-rays can be taken in the office.
The First Adjustment
At your initial visit, Dr. Z may perform a chiropractic adjustment. In the hands of a trained professional like Dr. Z., an adjustment—also called spinal manipulation—harnesses controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude and velocity on a joint. And while adjustments most often occur in the area of your spine, a Richardson chiropractor may also adjust other joints such as the shoulder, knee, wrist or ankle to improve function and restore alignment.
If you are seeing Dr. Z for back or neck pain, then more than one adjustment will likely be necessary. You may need several that will be separated by a day or two. Eventually, the treatment will begin to reduce irritation, so you can get back to your normal activities and living life pain free!
If you have any questions for the doctor that you would like answered before you arrive for your first appointment, don’t hesitate to call our office. Dr. Z. or another member of our team will be glad to help.
