Types of Headaches
Not all headaches are the same. They can originate from different causes or triggers and manifest in different ways. Luckily, Dr. Z is able to treat practically all headaches and help ensure that your body is in proper alignment. Read on to learn more about the three main types of headaches.
Tension Headaches
Patients with tension headaches often describe this pain as having a tight band around their head that creates a dull ache. This sensation can occur episodically or chronically for more than 15 days within a month and tends to get worse toward the end of the day. Some also experience tenderness in the shoulder and neck muscles. Causes of a tension headache include depression, anxiety, eye strain, neck injury, or cervical vertebrae abnormality.
Migraine Headaches
Those who suffer from migraine headaches feel debilitating pain typically on one or both sides of the forehead from a few hours to a few days. In addition, a migraine is often accompanied with nausea, dizziness, and sensitivity to light, sound, smell, and touch. Some people even have what are called visual disturbances, i.e., blurred vision, flashing lights, or a temporary blind spot. There are many potential triggers for migraines, including certain foods or alcohol, stress, crying, loud noises, and hormonal fluctuations.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are usually localized around one eye but can spread to the other eye, the face, neck, or head. This pain causes symptoms like facial swelling, drooping eyelids, tearing of one or both eyes, and a runny nose. Unfortunately, lying down tends to make the intense pain even worse, meaning that it can easily disturb sleep, and this type of headache can last between 15 minutes and three hours at a time.
Treatment of Headaches
Chances are that you’ve tried medicating with prescription-strength or over-the-counter pain relievers. Perhaps you’ve even been prescribed preventive medication like antidepressants, muscle relaxants, beta blockers, or even Botox. However, once you and Dr. Z determine the type of headache you’re experiencing, we can try to identify the root cause. As a result, we can begin a treatment plan to ease your suffering.
As part of your treatment, we may encourage you to implement stress-relieving exercises, like meditation or yoga, and regular aerobic exercise into your lifestyle. You can also give acupuncture a try. In addition, Dr. Z can make manual adjustments to your spinal alignment, specifically your cervical vertebrae, to reduce your symptoms. If possible, you may also want to improve the ergonomics of your work and home environments to keep your headache triggers to a minimum.
