Even for many adults, dressing up is a big part of the fun on Halloween. However, if you tend to suffer from back problems, you need to be careful; certain kinds of costumes can contribute to poor posture and back pain. To help you enjoy the spooky festivities to the fullest without putting too much strain on your back, here’s a brief look at 4 types of costumes that you should avoid on October 31st.
1. Costumes That Restrict Movement
Plenty of people choose to dress up as superheroes on Halloween, but in many cases, this means wearing tight clothes. If your costume ends up being too tight, it can restrict movement and put unnecessary strain on your lower back, resulting in pain. If you’re concerned about your back, you should try to choose a comfortable costume that won’t affect the way you move.
2. Costumes with Heels
Do you plan to dress up when you take your kids to go trick-or-treating? If so, it’s best not to wear heels as part of your costume. Heels change your body’s alignment, which puts extra pressure on your feet and back. Consequently, spending an entire night walking in heels can exacerbate back pain. It’s best to plan on wearing more comfortable shoes for your family’s Halloween excursion.
3. Costumes That Include Heavy Objects
Sometimes you might carry some type of prop as part of your Halloween costume. Whatever you might end up carrying, you should make sure that it isn’t too heavy. Carrying a heavy object with you for an extended period of time can take a significant toll on your back. Be sure to choose lightweight props that are easy to lift and carry.
4. Costumes with Tight Neckties
Dressing as certain characters may involve wearing a necktie. However, you should always take the time to make sure that the tie isn’t too tight. Otherwise, it could lead to increased tension in the back or neck. As a general rule, when you wear a tie, you should be able to fit a few fingers in the space between it and your neck; if you’re unable to do so, you should consider loosening it.
Picking the right kind of costume can go a long way toward helping you avoid unnecessary back pain while still getting the most out of the Halloween festivities.
